Held: When the Sacred is Stripped Away
There’s a Natalie Grant song called “Held” that carries the weight of so many women’s silent stories. It’s about what happens when trauma strikes, when the sacred is torn from your life — and how Jesus is there to carry you through the process of healing from trauma.
Millions of women have had the sacred ripped from them.
The Weight of Violation: Beginning the Healing from Trauma
Whether it happened in childhood or adulthood, in a moment or over years—whether anyone ever knew—violation leaves a mark. It steals something precious. It breaks trust. It hardens us in ways we didn’t choose.
And what happens next? We build walls. We protect ourselves. We turn that soft, open heart into stone so nothing can hurt us like that again. It’s survival. It makes sense.
But survival mode was never meant to be home.
The Heart of Stone
God created us with a heart of flesh—soft, open, capable of giving and receiving love. But when that heart gets wounded, it hardens. We go numb. We disconnect. We do whatever it takes to not feel the pain.
“I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh.” (Ezekiel 36:26, NIV)
That stone? It saved you. It kept you standing when you should have fallen apart. But you were never meant to live forever behind walls.
Jesus Came for All of It
Jesus paid for every violation. Every stolen moment. Every scar—visible and invisible. Every way trauma hardened your heart. All of it was met on the cross.
“Surely he took up our pain and bore our suffering… and by his wounds we are healed.” (Isaiah 53:4-5, NIV)
Your trauma is not too broken for Jesus. Your hardened heart is not too hard for His hands. The broken, ugly, hidden parts of you—the ones you’ve locked away and pretend don’t exist—Jesus came specifically for those.
“He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.” (Psalm 147:3, NIV)
The Invitation
Jesus will not force His way into the locked rooms of your heart. He’s not a violator. He’s a healer. And healers ask permission.
“Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.” (Psalm 139:23-24, NIV)
When you’re ready—and only when you’re ready—you can invite Him in. Let Him see. Let Him touch those frozen places. Let Him do what He deeply desires to do: restore, redeem, and make you whole.
For the Women Still Holding On
If your heart is still stone, don’t shame yourself. That stone kept you alive. It did its job. But you don’t have to live locked away forever.
Jesus understands every wound that made you numb. He sees the parts of you that feel too damaged, too broken, too ugly to be loved. And He came anyway—to tell you that you’re worth healing.
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!” (2 Corinthians 5:17, NIV)
Your worth has never depended on your healing timeline. Your value was never conditional on how quickly you can move on. Jesus loves you exactly as you are—broken, defended, angry, numb, whatever you are right now.
And when you’re ready, He’s ready too. Not to shame you. Not to rush you. But to heal you with a tenderness that understands everything you’ve survived.
You are held. Even—and especially—in your brokenness.
If this touched your heart, you don’t have to keep carrying it alone. I’d love to walk alongside you. Learn more about coaching here.
